Sculptures

Square

During the years from 2002 to 2012, Yasmin Maier created more than 100 sculptures. Each of them was carved out of a block of European larch with a base of 16 x 16 cm and hight about 160 cm. She took her inspiration from biographies. Most of the people she portrayed came from an artistic area. But there also where some she created as commissional work.

Whenever the artist had felt deeply enough into the people through her intensive examination and felt an emotional bond with them, she set to work. Once she started, she gave herself completely to her work – persevering, indispensable and passionate. During this time she subordinated her entire life rhythm to the emerging figure – until her work was completed. She once said of the exhausting creative process: “It’s hard work. No machines – just carving tools.” For Yasmin Maier it was always a bit like having a new child.

Like in real life, any sculpture is a unique item. The artist understood in a special way, how to carve all the significant features and properties of her living references, out of a thin wooden block. Distinctive for her sculptures are the high forehead, the prominent cheeks and the sustained shape of the body, which by the reduced forms and paintings often seems much sturdier, than the slim wooden workpiece would let you assume.
